What is the ASUW?
The ASUW is the governing body for undergraduate and graduate students on the University of Washington campus. The association is composed of student-run commissions, programs, enterprises, and committees, and is led by an executive body called the Board of Directors. The ASUW is operated entirely by UW students, and is funded by a contribution from the UW Services and Activities Fee. ASUW services are located entirely in the Husky Union Building (HUB) on the UW Seattle campus.
What does ASUW do?
That's a tough question, since we do quite a bit! The ASUW provides
services that inform, aid, develop, entertain, advocate for, and connect students at the university. This includes things like the HUB Film Series, campus concerts and events, the student lobbyist in Olympia, the Experimental College, the Bike Shop, Off Campus Housing Affairs, RainyDawg Radio, diversity commissions, the Student Senate, many other committees and programs.
Who can work for ASUW?
To be eligible, you must be either a UW undergraduate taking at least 6 credits or a UW graduate student taking at least 4 credits.
What are my hours going to be? How will it fit in with classes?
It depends upon the position, but all hours are flexible and up to the employee to determine.
Who will I be working for?
ASUW is owned and operated by students on campus. Due to this fact,
your direct manager will be the ASUW Personnel Director. Still, the people we're ultimately accountable to are the students. ASUW employees are also considered employees of the UW, and therefore of the State of Washington.
What is the salary like?
Salaries and hours paid vary with the position, but rates are generally very competitive with those of other student jobs, and the ASUW gives raises in accordance with increases in the state-determined cost-of-living.
When do I start working?
Your start date depends on the position you apply for.
What if I'm studying abroad for a quarter or two next year? Can I still apply?
According to Executive Order 50, students are allowed to take a quarter off and still hold a campus job. However, you must still be in the Seattle area during the leave, and continue to report to work.
Are there any jobs that start in Winter Quarter?
Yes, the Elections Administration Chair starts in Winter Quarter, and applications for this job will be open starting in the middle of Fall Quarter.
Will I have to work during the summer?
If you want to work over the summer, this is an option, and must be
approved by the Personnel Director. However, some jobs are required to work for all or part of the summer. See the full job description of the position you're interested in for more info.
Where will I be working?
All ASUW services and programs operate out of the Husky Union Building
(HUB) on the UW Seattle campus. You're expected to work in the HUB as well, but for some positions, off-site work is compensated for as well.
Are there ways to get involved with ASUW besides applying for a job?
Of course! Whether you apply or not, please think about being an ASUW
volunteer next year! Our volunteers serve on our various committees and
do much of the important work of the ASUW. For more information on
volunteering, contact the Vice-President at asuwvp@u.washington.edu.
Who can I contact for more information?
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Kimberly Reid, the
Personnel Director at asuwpd@u.washington.edu or by
calling her direct at 206-685-7197.
